Science

The Science Area of Learning aims to give pupils an engaging and rewarding experience. We aim to support pupils in becoming independent, ambitious and capable learners who will thrive in an ever-changing world. We aim to provide a variety of practical and academic skills that are transferable and will prepare them for the future study and careers. Our ethos is a practically taught approach that gives opportunities for pupils to flourish at all ability levels. As a department we strive to provide the pupils with a wide range of opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. We have strong links with Swansea University, Cardiff University Medical School, Coleg Sir Gar, Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW), Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics who provide our pupils with additional opportunities and to broaden their educational opportunities.

QEHS pupils have had great success at KS3 in STEM events aimed at girls, and the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. At KS4 and KS5 pupils have the option to compete in the Biology Olympiad, Chemistry Olympiad, the Science and Health Live seminars, as well as Wales Gene Park lectures for pupils who wish to pursue careers in medicine. For pupils interested in Science and Engineering we attend lectures with Swansea University at KS4 and KS5, as well as competing in a National STEM competition

Pupils are taught in ability groups (from year 9 onwards) that are reviewed on a regular basis following the end of topic  tests and other assessment tasks. Our aim is for pupils to achieve at the highest possible level for themselves. At Key Stage 4 and 5 pupils are taught by subject specialists.
