Welcome to the QEH Young Carers Area
Young Carers are children or young people aged under 18 who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, poor mental health or issues with substance misuse. They may be taking on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that an adult would normally do.
Young carers aged between 16 and 25 are often called young adult carers.

Bronze Award for ‘Investors in Carers’
We are delighted to announce we have just been awarded our Bronze Award for ‘Investors in Carers’. This is an award-winning scheme unique to Hywel Dda Health Board and Wales that encourages settings across the three Counties of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, and Pembrokeshire to adopt and promote best practice in identifying and supporting Unpaid Carers of all ages.
We have been supporting Parents/Carers, Young Carers and Staff who are recognised as Carers with the help of the Carers Trust. They provide support for 5 -25 year olds, regardless of where they live in the county. You can get support through the CCYC project as well as have the opportunity to meet others of a similar age with shared experiences so you don’t have to feel alone or isolated as many young and young adult carers do.
As a school, we are looking forward to presenting our updated portfolio to apply for our 'SIlver Award'. You can find more information by visiting our 'Young Carers' section on our website for further information.

‘Amser’ delivering short breaks for unpaid carers in Carmarthenshire
To mark Carers Week Carers Trust Crossroads West Wales and Carers Trust are launching the Time Together Project to provide short breaks for unpaid carers as part of the ‘Amser’ grant fund
The Time Together Project will provide short break opportunities for unpaid carers across Carmarthenshire including a grants scheme to fund short break opportunities with friends or family, activities for carers (both with and without the individuals they care for) and weekend activity sessions for children and young people with complex needs, learning disabilities and autism.
This project is part of the Wales-wide Amser programme. Amser, Welsh for ‘time’, is the grant fund for third sector organisations delivering personalised, flexible and creative short breaks to unpaid carers in Wales through Welsh Government funding.
- The Time Together Project will support unpaid carers of all ages across Carmarthenshire and can be accessed by contacting Carers Trust Crossroads West Wales on 0300 0200 002 or by emailing info@ctcww.org.uk
- Unpaid carers across Wales will be able to apply for funded breaks through their Amser local provider. Details of providers and more about Amser are available on the Carers Trust website.
- The Amser fund is in addition to funded short breaks through Regional Partnership Boards as part of the £9m Welsh Government Short Breaks Fund and local authority provided respite and short break options.
